General elections

What happens before, during and after an election has been called.

The last UK general election was held Thursday 4 July 2024, with the Labour Party winning a commanding majority. 

The next general election must be called by August 2029, however the prime minister can choose to hold it at any point before this.

Votes at 16 must come with improved education about the democratic process

The government’s new strategy for strengthening and modernising democracy is welcome, but the new proposals need to involve improved civic education.
