Working to make government more effective

AI use at the Institute for Government

The Institute for Government recognises the value that AI tools and technology can bring, and also the risks and challenges associated with their use.

The Institute for Government recognises the value that AI tools and technology can bring, and also the risks and challenges associated with their use.

We want to use AI to enhance the quality of our research and increase our impact, doing so responsibly and monitoring carefully our use of the technology.

AI tools support elements of our analysis and allow us to be more efficient in carrying out tasks – but their use does not replace staff judgement or responsibility. All contributors to Institute work are accountable for the accuracy, quality and integrity of their work.

We also believe in operating transparently, being clear to our stakeholders on our red lines for use of AI.

Use in our work

Generative AI tools are not used to draft any of the body text of Institute for Government outputs. This includes the body text of publications, comments, explainers, live blogs and podcast scripts, including executive summaries of these outputs. Generative AI tools may be used to suggest a structure for the body text of an output before something has been written, and for functional tasks like checking spelling and grammar while something is being written, but are not used to suggest or make more extensive contributions to any body text.

Generative AI tools are also not used to draft press releases.

Generative AI tools may be used to produce text other than the body text of Institute for Government outputs, such as titles, headers, endnotes and image alt text. They may also be used to produce descriptions of these outputs for use on the Institute website.

Generative AI tools may be used for other externally facing text, such as other web page text, presentations, video scripts, speaker briefings and event and partnership proposals.

In any rare instance where, exceptionally, the use of generative AI tools to create body text for an Institute for Government output has been approved outside of the principles set out here, we will disclose this use in the output in question, describing explicitly how it has been used. All Institute for Government publications will include a general statement directing readers to this statement on AI use.
Generative AI tools are not used to create photographs for external use, including in Institute for Government outputs, on social media and in external presentations.

Generative AI tools may be used to create other graphics and visuals for external use, such as report graphics and timelines, data visualisations, icons, slide layouts, and event promotion graphics. Text content of these graphics and visuals is treated in line with our approach to externally facing text (see above).

In any rare instance where, exceptionally, the use of generative AI tools to create photographs has been approved outside the principles set out here, we will clearly label them as being created with AI. Other graphics and visuals produced using generative AI tools will not be labelled as created with AI.

Recruitment

AI tools are not used to sift, filter or grade recruitment applications.

Data security
