Sir Ian became chairman of the Institute’s Board of Governors in July 2025. Prior to that, he was deputy chair. Other current appointments are chair of Land Securities Group plc, chair of Spire Healthcare plc, and chair of King Charles III Charitable Fund.
His previous appointments include being chair of Channel 4, non-executive director of Menhaden plc, the lead non-executive director for the government from 2016–2021; chairman of Debenhams; CEO of Kingfisher plc and B&Q; chairman of Maisons du Monde. He was also chairman of the British Retail Consortium; chairman of The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group on climate change; president of the Business Disability Forum President’s Group; and chaired the Ecosystem Markets Task Force.
Sir Ian was knighted in the 2014 New Year Honours for services to business, sustainability and the environment, and is a Chevalier of the Chevalier of the Ordre national du Mérite. He has won a number of awards including lifetime contributions to retailing and Fortune WEF Award for Leadership.
