Workshop: An introduction to working in private office

A practical, in-person workshop equipping new private office staff with the knowledge, skills and networks to hit the ground running.

The civil servants who work closest with ministers – their private office – have a huge impact on how effective ministers are. They play a critical role in ensuring their minister’s priorities are understood across government, their time is used effectively, and their decisions are implemented smoothly.

Drawing on insights from our extensive Ministers Reflect archive, alongside our ongoing research and engagement with ministers and their teams, this workshop provides new private office staff with a structured, detailed introduction to their role. It provides the tools, context and practical know-how to succeed in such a demanding and high-profile roles.

Who should attend

This workshop is aimed at those new to private office, or who have joined within the last six months.

Whilst focused on those working in ministerial private offices, staff from special advisers’ private offices and senior official private offices are welcome to join.

Private office work is fast-paced and full-on from the moment you get started. This resource for new joiners to private office will take you through some foundational things you can do to set yourself up for success during your time in post.

What this workshop will cover

Participants will explore the unique challenges and expectations of private office, and develop practical strategies to deliver high-quality support.

You will: 

  • Discuss why a minister needs a private office – and what they need from them.
  • Examine the dual-facing nature of your role in serving both ministers and the department.
  • Identify some common challenges of the role and how to manage them.
  • Practise tools and approaches for managing competing demands and supporting ministerial effectiveness.

Expert facilitators: The workshop will be delivered by experienced facilitators, including former civil servants, who blend deep research insight with practical knowledge of how private offices work.

Interactive learning: Using scenarios and small group discussions, you’ll learn from your peers and apply your insights to real-world problems.
