The extent of government procurement

The Institute for Government invites you to the launch of its report, Government procurement: The scale and nature of contracting in the UK.

A new Institute for Government report shows that government spends a third of taxpayers’ money with private contractors. This represents three decades of increasing use of external suppliers by government. What is government spending that money on, and with which companies? The Institute for Government hosted an event to launch its report, Government procurement: The scale and nature of contracting in the UK, which answers these and other big questions.

The report was introduced by Gavin Freeguard, Programme Director at the Institute for Government. We are grateful to Spend Network for contributing data and analysis to this report.

To discuss the findings, our panel included:

  • Gareth Rhys Williams, Government Chief Commercial Officer and Non-executive Director, Crown Commercial Service.
  • Ian Makgill, Founder, Spend Network.
  • Gavin Hayman, Executive Director of the Open Contracting Partnership.

The event was chaired by Emma Norris, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.
