Select committee chairs

Who can tell you what makes the difference between being a really effective member of a select committee and simply making up the numbers?

This publication draws together the views and ideas of people with experience of interacting with select committees – MPs, ministers, civil servants, witnesses and external observers.

It presents their observations and advice on what works and the mistakes others have made. The material we present was gathered in the course of over 40 interviews and five workshops, conducted as part of an Institute for Government project on the impact of parliamentary committees on government.
