The role that Parliament should play in the process of the UK leaving the EU has been a matter of discussion and debate since the EU referendum. The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Hilary Benn MP, Chair of the Commons committee charged with scrutinising the EU exit process, who shared his thoughts in conversation with our Director, Bronwen Maddox, and then in Q&A with the audience.

Since entering the House of Commons in 1999, Mr Benn has held a number of ministerial and Cabinet roles, including Secretary of State for International Development and Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Before being elected as Chair of the Committee on Exiting the EU, Mr Benn held a number of posts in the shadow Cabinet, including Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and, most recently, shadow Foreign Secretary.
