Working to make government more effective

In-person event

Brexit: what role for Parliament?

As Parliament returned from its summer recess, attention turned to what role it should play in the UK’s exit from the European Union.

As Parliament returned from its summer recess, attention turned to what role it should play in the UK’s exit from the European Union, including whether it needs to be involved in triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty; how it should go about scrutinising the negotiations; and the process for ratifying any final deal. The Institute for Government held a panel discussion on Tuesday 13 September to explore these key questions.

We assembled a panel that brought together knowledge and experience from the House of Commons, House of Lords and public law.

Our panel included:

  • Lord Boswell, Chair of the House of Lords EU Committee
  • Alistair Burt MP, Former Minister of State for Community and Social Care at the Department of Health
  • Seema Malhotra MP, Member for Feltham and Heston and former Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury
  • Tom Hickman, Barrister and Reader in Public Law, UCL

This event was chaired by Dr Hannah White, Programme Director of the Institute for Government.
