Andy Haldane in conversation

The IfG welcomed Andy Haldane, Chief Economist of the Bank of England, to talk about 'An economy that works for everyone'.

The Institute for Government welcomed Andy Haldane, Chief Economist of the Bank of England, to talk about 'An economy that works for everyone'. In discussion with Bronwen Maddox, Director of the Institute for Government, he considered:

  • why confidence in 'if you work hard, you’ll do better' has fallen for many people
  • how economic recovery is spread unevenly across the UK
  • the challenges in engaging with the wider public on key economic issues
  • what to do about it.

Andy Haldane, Chief Economist since June 2014, is also Executive Director for Monetary Analysis, Research and Statistics, with responsibility for research and statistics across the Bank of England, and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee. He has written widely on monetary and financial policy in the UK and internationally; in 2014, Time magazine called him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

We were delighted to have the chance to hear his views at a point when, not least because of the EU referendum vote, so many aspects of the UK’s economic outlook are intensely debated.
