Brexit: negotiating the UK’s future relationship with the EU

This Question Time-style event looked at the options for negotiating the UK's exit from the European Union and how these negotiations might run.

Now that the UK has voted to leave the European Union, attention has turned to what our future relationship with the EU might look like. To help unpick the negotiating options for the UK, and shed some light on how they might run, the Institute for Government held a ‘Question Time’ event on Wednesday 20 July.
We assembled a panel that brought together experience from the EU institutions, Whitehall and other member states.

Our panel included:

  • Michel Petite, former Director-General of Legal Services and Head of Cabinet to President Prodi, European Commission
  • Sir Andrew Cahn, former chef de cabinet of Vice President of the Commission Neil Kinnock and CEO of UKTI
  • Agata Gostyńska-Jakubowska, Research Fellow at the Centre for European Reform
  • Dr Hannah White, Programme Director of the Institute for Government
  • Mark Sedwill, Permanent Secretary at the Home Office and former FCO Director-General, Political

The event was chaired by Julian McCrae, Deputy Director at the Institute for Government.
