Working to make government more effective

In-person event

Open data and transparency

The Institute for Government and the Open Data Institute invite you to an event to discuss how we got here and where we go next.

GOV.UK, data.gov.uk, legislation.gov.uk: the UK is seen as a world leader in the open data and transparency agenda. But how did open data become accepted?  And how will it evolve over the years, and parliaments, to come?

The Institute for Government and the Open Data Institute invite you to an event with some of the key players in the evolution of UK government policy on open data to discuss how we got here and where we go next. The panel will look back across different governments, and draw insights from the political, civil service and technical worlds.

Our panel’s expertise will be supplemented by contributions from the floor, including key players from outside government like the Royal Statistical Society and from key insiders such as the Cabinet Office’s open data team.

Our event will open with remarks from Rt Hon Francis Maude MP, the Minister for the Cabinet Office, who leads the government’s work on the issue.

Our panel:

Rt Hon Francis Maude MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General.

Sir Nigel Shadbolt Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Southampton, and was appointed in 2009 as Information Advisor to the UK Government, assisting with work that led to the development of  data.gov.uk.

Jeni Tennison, Technical Director, Open Data Institute, and former technical architect and lead developer for legislation.gov.uk.

Tom Loosemore lead on strategy at the UK’s Government Digital Service, Cabinet Office, and member of the Power of Information Taskforce (2008-2009).

Chaired by Julian McCrae, Deputy Director, Institute for Government
