Lessons from Leaders of Reform: A Conversation with Terry Moran and Lord O'Donnell

Terry Moran spent three years as Secretary to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Australia’s most senior public service role and before that was Secretary of Department of Premier and Cabinet in the state of Victoria for 7 years. In those roles, he led substantial reforms, both within the Australian and Victorian Public Service and in the broader delivery of services and structure of Government. He also co-ordinated Australia’s highly successful response to the global financial crisis.

Gus O’Donnell, UK Cabinet Secretary from 2005 – 2011, also oversaw substantial changes and reform in the UK’s civil service, including transitions between three prime ministers and preparations for Britain’s first full coalition government since World War II. 

In this personal conversation they will discuss: 

• The role of leadership in reform 
• The challenges of making change happen in public service
• Leading through crises 

The event will be chaired by the Rt Hon Peter Riddell, Director of the Institute for Government.
