On 26th June the Chancellor will announce his spending plans for 2015-16. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) and the Institute for Government (IfG) have teamed up to offer media and commentators a background briefing to explore the issues for government in this Spending Round.

We’ll also look back to the last spending review to examine the extent to which those plans remain intact and we’ll look ahead to the spending squeeze that is planned to continue through to 2017-18.

Carl Emmerson, Deputy Director of the IFS, and Julian McCrae, Deputy Director of the IfG, will discuss:

The significance of the 2015-16 spending round for departments and the public sector;
What ringfencing the NHS, schools and aid budgets from cuts means for the trade-off between unprotected departments;
The latest data on departmental cuts and spending – whether the cuts announced in the last Spending Review are on target, what explains the underspends announced in the Budget, and how different departments are coping;
The potential length and depth of the austerity measures to come, and compare the UK’s progress to other countries experiences of fiscal consolidation; and
How this spending round fits with the wider processes for planning and managing the public purse.
