Whitehall and Europe, 1979-2010

In February 2016 the Institute for Government held a seminar looking at the history of Whitehall’s role in European policy.

The seminar brought together officials who had worked on European issues serving successive governments from the early 1970s to the late 2000s. The aim was to add to the historical record as well as analyse what changed over the period.

The seminar explored many of the major political moments in British European policy at which these officials were present. Participants analysed the role of officials in supporting successive governments to meet their policy aims, how Whitehall was organised to achieve it, and reflected on how successful it had been.

The seminar was sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and forms part of the Institute for Government's Contemporary History of Whitehall programme.
