Hacking organograms: unlocking government data

Government departments are required to publish organograms, which contain vital information about departments and their civil servants (like grades, salaries and professions), every six months.

But publication has been patchy – only two departments have published all their organograms. One reason for that is departments not seeing the value of the data contained within them.

For this hack day, we asked you to help us unlock the value of these organograms. We’ve collected all the published data for major departments for you to visualise or build something that shows how departments could better use organograms.

Some suggested challenges include using the organograms to:

• trace the line of accountability for a specific public service
• calculate the tenure and turnover in senior leadership positions
• understand departmental grade and professional structure.
