The Institute for Government and Brook Lapping held a private screening of BBC2's Inside Europe: 10 Years of Turmoil (Episode 2), which looks at how Europe handled the Eurozone crisis.

The latest box set by acclaimed producer Norma Percy opens the lid on the fierce arguments and clashes of personalities as Europe’s leaders struggle with crises that nearly tore the union apart.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion with film makers Norma Percy and director Tania Rakhmanova and key players during the crisis:

  • Olli Rehn, Governor of the Bank of Finland and EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs 2009-2014
  • Giorgis Papaconstantinou, Greek Finance Minister 2009-2011 and author of GAME OVER: the inside story of the Greek crisis
  • Sir Jon Cunliffe, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England and UK Permanent representative to the EU 2012-2013 and PM adviser on European and Global Issues 2007-2017

They talked about what the film tells us about Europe’s response to its biggest economic crisis, ahead of the UK’s future talks with the EU.

The event was chaired by Jill Rutter, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.
