The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South and Finsbury and Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.

In a keynote speech, Ms Thornberry analysed the current organisational challenges facing the Foreign Office. She set out the alternative style of political leadership that the Labour Party would offer the Foreign Office if in government, and the principles Labour would apply in its approach to foreign policy.

The event was chaired by Bronwen Maddox, Director of the Institute for Government.

Emily Thornberry has been the MP for Islington South and Finsbury since 2005. She has served as Shadow Attorney General, Shadow Minister of State for Employment, Shadow Secretary of State for Defence and Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the EU. She was called to Bar in 1983, serving as a barrister for 25 years.
