Evidence has a crucial role in making and shaping policy that improves people’s lives. Government needs it to design effective policies; parliament needs it to hold ministers to account. Yet ministers, officials and parliamentarians often struggle to access and use evidence in a timely way. Senior ministers have made addressing this a priority for civil service reform.

At this event, we discussed how to improve the role of evidence in policy making in government and parliament.

On the panel will be:

  • Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, Chair of the Select Committee on Science and Technology
  • Chi Onwurah MP, Shadow Minister for Science, Research and Digital
  • Tom Sasse, Senior Researcher, Institute for Government

The discussion drew on a short report published by the Institute for Government and the Forum, Imperial College London, summarising two private roundtables covering these themes.

Professor Mary Ryan, Vice-Dean (Research), Faculty of Engineering, Imperial College London provided opening remarks.

The discussion was chaired by Dr Catherine Haddon, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government.

We would like to thank The Forum, Imperial College London for supporting the report and the event series.
