In conversation with Jess Phillips MP

Labour MP Jess Phillips discusses her new book and what it means to be a woman in politics.

The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Labour MP Jess Phillips to discuss her new book Everywoman: One woman’s truth about speaking the truth. It is a front-line account of what it means to be an MP today – and to be a woman in politics.

The event was guest-chaired by Sam Smethers, Chief Executive of the Fawcett Society, the UK’s leading gender equality and women’s rights charity.

Drawing on the themes of the book, the event explored the experience of women in Westminster and politics and the challenge of being an MP during such turbulent times.

Jess Phillips was elected the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley in 2015. Before this, she worked with victims of domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking. She has worked with the Home Office, the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Communities and Local Government on issues of Violence Against Women and Girls.
