Working to make government more effective

In-person event

Brexit: the implications for the Union

The second event in our Brexit series raised a set of questions about the relationship between the UK’s four nations.

Brexit raised a set of questions about the relationship between the UK’s four nations. Can the UK emerge intact from this period of turmoil and what kind of constitutional system might be needed to make this work?

The Institute for Government held a public discussion of these pressing issues, as part of a new series of events on the impact of Brexit.

The panel explored the high-profile issues facing the devolved nations, including how devolved governments can be involved in negotiating the terms of Brexit; Scotland's ability to hold another independence referendum; and the impact on the Northern Ireland peace process and on devolution in Wales.

Our panel:

  • Ken Thomson, Director General for Strategy & External Affairs, Scottish Government
  • Carys Evans, Constitutional Affairs and Inter-governmental Relations, Welsh Government
  • Akash Paun, Fellow, Institute for Government

This event was chaired by Peter Riddell, Director, Institute for Government.
