The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Senator Scott Ryan, President of the Australian Senate.

The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Senator Scott Ryan, President of the Australian Senate.

The senator spoke about the Australian Senate and governing in an era of political disruption. Three of the past four elections in Australia have been decided by exceptionally narrow margins. Government has had to adjust to previously exceptionally uncommon features including a hung parliament, minority government and narrow majorities.

The event was chaired by Jill Rutter, senior fellow at the Institute for Government. There will be an opportunity for audience questions.

Scott Ryan was elected the youngest ever president of the Senate in November 2017. Immediately prior to this, he was special minister of state and minister assisting the prime minister for cabinet. He has also served in various ministerial capacities in the education portfolio.
