300 years of British prime ministers

As we mark 300 years of British PMs, the Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Sir Anthony Seldon and Professor Tim Bale.

As we mark the anniversary of 300 years of British prime ministers, the Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Sir Anthony Seldon to look back on the characters and careers, and the controversies and contradictions, of some of the most famous occupants of 10 Downing Street.

From Walpole to Johnson, via Disraeli, Gladstone, Churchill, Thatcher and many more, the event will look at three centuries of prime ministers and reflect on how the role has changed over time – and who has, or hasn’t, made a success of their period in office. And, as Boris Johnson grapples with the biggest crisis in decades, which prime ministers have best demonstrated leadership when under the greatest pressure?’

Sir Anthony will be joined on the panel by Dr Catherine Haddon, Senior Fellow and the Institute’s resident historian, and Tim Bale, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary, University of London and Deputy Director of the UK in a Changing Europe.

The event will be chaired by Jill Rutter, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government.
