The Board of Governors, chaired by Lord Sainsbury, provides strategic direction for the Institute’s work and exercises corporate governance over its operational activities. The governors are trustees of the charity and directors of the company limited by guarantee. The Board meets quarterly and the Finance and Audit Committee – a sub-committee of the Board, chaired by Sir Ian Cheshire – convenes ahead of those meetings to review risk management and financial and regulatory matters in order to report back to the Board.

The Board aims to maintain a balance of political opinion and encompass experience of government and the civil service, business and wider civil society. Members serve three-year terms, which may be extended as the Institute’s needs require.
