Negotiating Brexit: the view from European capitals

Two days before the European Council meets to judge whether there has been “sufficient progress” in the Brexit negotiations, the Institute for Government brought together influential commentators from some of the major players in the EU 27.

We discussed the prospects for that Council and how recent developments – the outcome of the German elections, uncertainty about the future Coalition and rise of the AfD, President Macron’s “Initiative Europe” and the fallout from the independence vote in Catalonia - will affect the future course of the negotiations.

Our panel included:

  • Christine Ockrent, Journalist, writer & producer, Affaires Etrangères of France Culture
  • Stefanie Bolzen, UK correspondent of Die Welt
  • Pablo Guimón, UK correspondent of El Pais
  • Jacqueline Minor, Former Head of the EU Commission’s Representation in the UK

The event was chaired by Jill Rutter, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.
