Brexit and Ireland

The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Adrian O’Neill, Irish Ambassador to the UK, for a conversation about Brexit and Ireland.

The issue of how to deal with the border on the island of Ireland remains the biggest challenge in the way of concluding a Withdrawal Agreement between the UK and the EU.

The Institute for Government was therefore delighted to welcome Adrian O’Neill, Irish Ambassador to the UK, for a conversation about both the current prospects for agreement and Ireland’s ambitions for the future relationship between the UK and the EU.

The discussion was chaired by Jill Rutter, Programme Director at the Institute for Government. There was an opportunity for audience questions.

Ambassador O’Neill took up duty as Ireland’s 17th Ambassador to the United Kingdom in September 2017. He previously served as Second Secretary General to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with responsibility for the Ireland, UK and Americas Division, from 2014 to 2017.
