About this event
The meeting aims to open up discussion about the myriad and diverse roles that an MP is expected to undertake, such as:
- representing constituents
- legislating and scrutinising legislation in Parliament
- fulfilling select committee and other duties
- fulfilling party obligations
- possibly undertaking a ministerial role or participating in a coalition role.
As there is no job description for an MP, each individual balances these overlapping – and sometimes contrasting – duties in their own way.
The panel will also consider the implications of the various political and constitutional reform proposals for the role of MPs, such as:
- alternative vote (AV)
- fewer constituencies
- fixed term parliaments
- recall mechanisms.
The meeting is free to attend – but you will need to have a conference pass as it is in the secure area.
Date: Tuesday 5 October
Time: 12.30pm – 2pm
Venue: Marquee 6, ICC, Birmingham (Inside the secure zone)
