Putting the Frontline First: Smarter Government
On Monday 7th December 2009, the Institute for Government hosted Gordon Brown at the Royal Society. He set out how Government, by making the necessary savings and taking tough choices on spending priorities, can both protect frontline services and help meet its commitment to halve the public deficit over four years.
Only an active government can reform public services to guarantee fair chances for all, or help build a vibrant civic society on which strong communities depend. The challenge is therefore to get smarter - not smaller - Government which can meet rising expectations for openness and accountability, local voice and control, and deliver the utmost value for money for every penny of public expenditure.
