Top 200 - Managing change through transition periods
Whether it's a fourth term of the existing administration or a new government, the Civil Service will be thinking about the implications and how best to prepare for and respond to possible change. The Institute has now undertaken extensive research into the transition period - including case studies from local government, Wales, Scotland and other comparable international examples (notably New Zealand, Australia and Canada) - that has useful applications for Whitehall both during election periods and at other times of externally-generated change.

The approach will be practical and is intended to be the first in a series of activities associated with how today's Whitehall can manage change through transition periods. Taking the summary and conclusions of the research as a starting point, it will focus on what has and has not worked with inputs from colleagues involved in previous transitions. The intention is to enable candid discussion of issues and concerns including planning and wider implications for the Civil Service, for example possible machinery of government changes.
