Permanent secretary objectives published today

In response to today’s publication of the permanent secretary objectives, Director of the Institute for Government, Peter Riddell, said:

“We welcome the publication today of the permanent secretary objectives. They are clear and specific and the transparency will enable better scrutiny by those inside and outside government, including parliamentary select committees. The key test will be how the appraisal system around these objectives will work and how success will be assessed. The accountability of permanent secretaries and ministers to Parliament is also still unclear. We would like to see how permanent secretaries will be developed and supported in their roles to succeed – development is a key part of any good appraisal system.”
