Institute for Government to present city tour findings to Secretary of State

Director of the Institute for Government Andrew Adonis will present his official findings on the appetite for elected mayors to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles and other interested parties.

Andrew Adonis has begun visiting the 12 cities that will hold a referendum to determine if they will introduce elected mayors.

He will determine the mood on the ground in each of the cities, hearing concerns or suggestions that local politicians, business leaders, media, other stakeholders may have with regards to a new mayoral governance model.

The provision for elected mayors was set out in the Localism Bill, which received its first reading 13 December 2010.

Andrew Adonis' tour forms part of the Institute's work looking at accountability in government.

It concludes at the end of February and the official report will be presented to the CLG soon after.
