Women Leaders Series: Philippa Roe Leading in Local Government

Philippa Roe, Leader of Westminster City Council, shares her experience of leading in local government.

In this fourth event in our Women Leaders series, Philippa Roe, Leader of Westminster City Council, shared her experience of leading in local government.

Philippa is one of only a handful of women in this leadership role. Fewer than 15% of the UK’s councils are led by women. At Westminster, she leads a council at the heart of business and tourism in London, which is often held up as an example of efficiency in local government. But the role of local government and its direct accountability for services and charges means it attracts controversy too.

Here she discusses her career in local government and other sectors; getting more women involved in local politics; the particular challenges and opportunities London has for women aspiring to reach the top.

Philippa was elected to Westminster Council in 2006, following a career in business, as an entrepreneur, and as a Director at Citigroup. Before entering politics, she advised the Conservative Party for many years. She was elected to Westminster Council in 2006, became a Cabinet Member in 2001, and was elected Leader of the Council in 2012.

The event was chaired by Peter Riddell, Director, Institute for Government.

We would like to thank EY for supporting the Women Leaders series.
