How will the UK's departure from the European Union affect our communications - the television, radio, broadband and phone services that we rely upon each day, and which have become a central part of our personal and working lives?

Sharon White, Chief Executive of the communications regulator Ofcom, tackled this question in a keynote speech at the Institute.

Leaving the EU will mean choices for the UK about replacing European laws that span our communications industries. This may also allow us to take a fundamental look at policy questions already being discussed at European level.

Sharon argued that laws and powers must be repatriated in the right way to benefit people and businesses in the UK. And regulators will need the right powers to protect consumers from emerging threats to competition.

This event was chaired by Bronwen Maddox, Director of the Institute for Government.
