Working to make government more effective

In-person event

The Coalition in Charts: Whitehall Monitor 2015 Annual Report Launch

A discussion of how data can be used by the public, parliament and the government itself, to make government more effective.

During five years of coalition government, UK government underwent profound changes: budgets and staff numbers were reduced, departments changed fundamentally what they did and how they did it, while technology changed the way citizens interact with public services.

2015’s Whitehall Monitor charts these changes, and examines the government’s record on transparency.

Looking back also allows us to look forward – what can the changes over the last five years tell us about the Spending Review and beyond?

The event began with a summary of the report from one of its authors, Gavin Freeguard, followed by a discussion on the use of data by the public, parliament and government itself to make government more effective.

Panellists included:

  • Jeni Tennison, Technical Director and Deputy CEO, Open Data Institute
  • Megan Lucero, Data Journalism Editor, The Times and Sunday Times
  • Final speaker TBC

This event was chaired by Daniel Thornton, Programme Director, Institute for Government.
