This Institute for Government event discussed Sir John Chilcot's long-awaited report into the Iraq war.

The event explored the role of inquiries in helping us understand what has gone wrong in government and how future mistakes can be avoided. Our panel compared the approach taken by Chilcot with those taken by other official Iraq inquiries – including two by parliamentary committees (Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence and Security), Butler and Hutton.

The panel included:

  • Sir Paul Jenkins KCB, QC, Former H.M. Procurator General, Treasury Solicitor and Head of the Government Legal Service (2006-2014)
  • Lord Evans of Weardale KCB DL (Jonathan Evans), Former Director General of MI5 (2007-2013)
  • Professor Tony Wright, Professor of Government and Public Policy at UCL. Former Chair of Commons Public Administration Select Committee.
  • Peter Riddell, Director, Institute for Government.

The event was chaired by Jill Rutter, Programme Director, Institute for Government.
